Not just for bodybuilding or barbeque competitions anymore, contests appear to be everywhere nowadays. The most democratic contest is probably American Idol where the winner is made up one’s mind by millions of voters. The list of contests could go on infinitely, but one rarely considers what makes an acceptable contest and why there are so many of them.
Some of the most common contests nowadays include writing contests, photo contests, video contests, sales contests, mega-millions lotteries, business plan contests, and model competitions. Contests are often utilized to increase brand awareness or reenforce what a brand stands for. They are also used to render incentives. For example giveaways often boost people to sign up for something like a newsletter, or react to surveys
The first step to a successful and profitable contest is to have specific goals and to consider what type of contest will produce the best results. For example should the contest necessitate unadulterated chance, an eminent skill level, or more universal population entries? A second criterion in making an acceptable contest is coordinating it so that the rules are easily understood. Finally, the prize for the acquiring entry should be persuasive enough to accomplish a good number of entries for the contest.
Viewers generally like to see three kinds of entrants. Those that are really acceptable, those that are really sorry, and those proper on the borderline of being enthusiastic where the decision to vote for that entrant to advance is ambitious to make.
Encouraging audience participation is a good way to generate buzz for the contest. The key factor in American Idol’s success has probably been the fact that anyone in the US can vote for a winner. The contestants themselves lend to the appeal of the contest as well. They are informal people who happen to be talented singers and have not yet been observed. Through their singing and interviews the audience feels as if they are getting to cognize the entrants.
Online, allowing the entrant to promote themselves helps increase awareness for a contest, especially if voters help decide the winner. Sconex.com, a cultural networking site for eminent school students, recently carried on a contest for unidentified musicians. It happened that bands came in the contest and then advanced themselves on MySpace, leading to thousands of fresh visitors to the site.
In the past few years, the internet has enabled companies to conduct contests cheaply while gaining wide exposure. Doritos made an ample splash in 2007 by having a contest where amateurs could submit a commercialised for the company and the acquiring ad was shown during the Super Bowl. Not only was the ad widely considered to be an acceptable one, but Doritos had an enthusiastic deal of buzz callable to the promotion.
Many people love to participate in contests – they even create their own competitions where there is no prize to win. One of the avant-garde websites for grading people’s looks was HotorNot.com. Users were boosted to vote on people’s’ looks and submit their personal pictures to see who was the best appearing. MySpace.com has been characterised as boosting users to vie to see who has the most friends and making up one’s mind which friends get into their top 8 friends list. XuQa.com doubled up users’’ interests in contests into a business. According to MSNBC.com “Xuqa (is) a social-networking-site-cum-contest, where users’ compete for popularity points by rolling up realistic kisses and hugs, acquiring poker games, expending ‘peanuts,’’ and even filling up out surveys and looking at ads, all to accomplish status levels.” Sugarloot.com is website consecrated solely to contests much as photo and video contests for individual categories like cutest pet, best tattoo, best spring interrupt video, best supernatural trick, and more.
Why do people love contests so much? Everybody seems to want to be a celebrity and claim their 15 minutes of fame. With the internet, contests are easier to come in than ever and often the cost is loose. Viewers can easily see individual entrants to the contest and go forth comments for them. All of these signs point to even more contest shows, websites, and promotions in the future

Whether it is brand spanking new or crumpled up in the back of your dad’s closet, retro fashion is still hot. Here are some tips on what to get if you want to look like a classic hipster:
1. The Old Bowling Shirt – Did this one ever really go out of style? Well, yes, but only for a little while. The classic bowling shirt is a rare retro find that will have you looking for a strike in no time. Look for bowling shirts with team names still embroidered on them or classic designs on the back.
2. Funky Shoes – Retro shoes that look like they were stolen off of a bandleader’s feet are still very hot. Look for classic saddle shoes or spectators. The best material is of course alligator if you really want that retro feel. When worse comes to worse, an old pair of bowling shoes will still work.
3. Ringneck Tees – These are still old standards in any retro closet. Ringneck tees, whether they are long sleeve or short, are a quick way to feel retro the minute you slip them on. Look for tees with a little wear on them if you are going for that true vintage look.
4. The Hawaiian Shirt – If you’re looking for an old Hawaiian shirt, remember, louder is better. Look for bright and bold prints that scream “I’m retro!” You can really have a lot of fun with these.
5. Chains and Jewelry – This was the era of the fraternity pins, class rings and awesome chains. Look for unique pieces of jewelry that will complete your whole retro look.
6. Classic Denim – Jeans were just starting to take off during this period and they were made so well, chances are they’ll still be good for plenty of years to come. The designs of this time period were simple, but the workmanship and pocket details will still stand the test of time.
7. Wide Ties – The 50’s were the era of the really wide tie. Look for some classic models with 50’s prints but don’t go overboard. If you don’t want to go quite that retro, skinny ties were all the rage in the 60’s and may work better with modern shirts.
8. Work Shirts – Even if your name isn’t Bob and you never worked at a gas station, these work shirts can go to work for you. Nothing says retro quite like someone else’s old work shirt.
9. Old Forgotten Brands – The best shirts are the ones that advertise for company’s that have long been extinct. Look for strange shirts with even stranger slogans on them. This will give you a truly retro look and feel. Classic for retro brands are still very hip. Look for an old Coca-Cola tee or even shirts for bands back in the day. The crazier the better with these shirts.
10. Don’t forget your hair – If you really want to go retro, don’t forget to include your head. Study classic styles from the 50’s and go to an old fashioned barber. You’ll look like you just stepped out of a time capsule.

Almost everywhere you look in Tampa, you will spot people wearing the ever popular embroidered polo shirts, which others also call golf shirts or . They are favourites as day to day casual of men, women and children alike. They are also widely used as uniforms for companies, institutions and schools. Because of their popularity, the same companies often use embroidered polo shirts as promotional items, too. It is not surprising, therefore, that wholesale custom as well as embroidery services for are also widely available in Tampa FL. But how did this phenomenon of embroidered polo shirts develop before they reached Tampa FL?
The term “polo shirt” is traceable to the game called polo which began in the 7th century in Persia. It was later brought to Great Britain by way of India. Interestingly, the word “polo” came from a Tibetan word “pulu” naming the wooden ball that is the focal point of the game.
In the early days, polo players wore long sleeved white button down collared shirts and white trousers, both made of cotton. In 1920, an Irish haberdasher based in Buenos Aires, named Lewis Lacey, added the embroidered figure of a polo player to his shirts. He was also a polo player with the Hurlingham Polo Club.
Similar long sleeved white button down collared shirts and white trousers in cotton, with the addition of white ties, were also worn by tennis players in the early days. They just rolled up their sleeves while playing a match.
This changed in 1926 when Rene Lacoste, a French tennis player who was a seven time Grand Slam champion, designed his own tennis shirt. He used the very breathable material of knitted cotton pique to make a with a soft flat collar, a buttoned placket, short cuffed sleeves and a longer back tail that stayed tucked in his trousers or shorts even during the rigorous movements of a match. The main focus of Lacoste was comfort and practicality. He added the embroidered crocodile on the left breast of his tennis shirts in 1927.
In 1933, Lacoste retired from playing tennis and decided to direct his efforts toward the mass manufacture and marketing of his tennis shirts. They quickly became popular not only as sports wear but even as casual wear throughout the world. Interestingly, Lacoste’s tennis shirts became more widely known as “polo shirts.” Eventually, they were adapted by golfers, as well, creating the new term “golf shirts.”
Perhaps another reason why the term “polo shirt” still prevails over “tennis shirt” or “golf shirt” is because well known American clothes designer Ralph Lauren called one of his clothing lines “Polo” and it is actually dominated by his version of the “polo shirt.” This looks very much like the Lacoste shirt except that it features the figure of a polo player instead of a crocodile.
These days there are myriad versions of the polo shirt, tennis shirt or golf shirt produced by various manufacturers. Basically, they are short sleeved which feature a soft collar with two or three buttons in front. A placket may or may not be included and a zipper sometimes replaces the buttons. For golf shirts, the sleeves are not cuffed. Pockets are sometimes added. Most versions still use knitted cotton pique but there are also shirts made from synthetic blends, merino wool or silk.
From this long history, the now ubiquitous embroidered polo shirts or golf shirts reached Tampa FL and the rest of the world. They will definitely remain as staples in people’s wardrobes in many parts of the globe.

I am sitting in the food court of a very busy shopping mall on a Saturday with a pad of paper. What am I doing? Counting how many people are wearing , what kind of they’re wearing, and about how old they are. This is my 4th Saturday conducting this survey at 4 different malls.
Before I began doing this “ survey” at the malls here in Dallas, I was expecting about 30-35% of the people would be wearing a . Was I ever wrong. I had no idea just how popular actually are.
First, who is wearing ? I counted a total of about 4,000 people over 4 weeks in this survey. In total, about 60-65% were wearing – twice my expectations! There was a variance in the age groups. For those under 25-years-old, about 80-85% wore . For those 25 to 40 years old, about 60% wore . And, for those over 40, about 35% wore .
While I expected the younger crowd to be wearing , what I was not expecting were those ages 35 – 50 wearing them. These are mostly parents, business people, and maybe a couple grandparents. Most of their were sports or college , or a brand name like Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica, or Polo – nothing crude of obnoxious.
Second, what kind of were they wearing? I rarely saw the same twice. There were funny , animal , Christian , patriotic , and all kinds of novelty . And, I wasn’t surprised to see a few crude or offensive ones in the mix either.
Younger kids, those between 5 and 12-years-old, wore a lot of . That age bracket was closer to 90%. Most of them had some kind of “cute” picture or slogan (like a Disney ), or something to do with sports. Most teenagers and college students wore that seem to match up closely with their identity.
More than anything, it became apparent that wearing a is a way to express oneself. Whether supporting a sports team, a university, or country, people wear to express themselves and make a statement. But, some people wear them just because it looks good, it’s trendy, and they’re comfortable. The industry is a huge business. While I don’t have the exact statistics, it made up 60% of the tops worn at the shopping malls around Dallas, TX over the last 4 weeks.
After arriving back home, what did I do? I went to my dresser, opened the drawer, and counted about 25 of my own. I put on my alma mater and sat down to watch the baseball playoffs.

Many people turn to Christian to let others know their inner heart and their love for God. These give you the chance to let others know how you feel with pictures or words that express your faith in God, angels, or in words that show God’s everlasting love.
