Here are a few things you will need to do to make a purchase on Ebay: 1. Set up an account. You need to create an Ebay account with a username and password. This account will be attached to an email address so you can be contacted without giving out your information and notified by Ebay of updates. The account will also be necessary to keep track of your reputation. Both buyers and sellers have a track records—this is a checks and balance method for Ebay. Seller can report buyers who wouldn’t pay for their goods, etc., and buyers can report sellers who sell products that were advertised falsely or shipped damaged items, etc.
2. Place a bid. Ebay is an auction site. Most items are listed for 7 days. Sometimes you will have the option to right away, and that will be noted on each individual item. To place a bid, you simply click the “Place Bid” button on the item of interest. Never place a bid that you wouldn’t be willing or able to pay if you were to win the item. Also, don’t place a bid until you have read all the details. You might see a picture of something you want, but then in the notes, the seller has listed that certain items are missing, etc. The bid will vary depending on what others have bid. You can bid the minimum or bid the maximum amount you are willing to pay. If you bid more, it will not show up on the website, but if someone were to bid after you, Ebay would raise your bid for you based on what your maximum amount is. If no one bids, you only pay the minimum bid.
3. Pay for your purchase. Once you win, you must pay for the item you won. The safest payment method (and sometimes the only one allowed by the seller) is through Paypal. It’s easy to set up an account on Paypal. Basically, what they do is almost instantly transfer the money safely from the buyer’s account to the seller’s without giving out any personal information to either parties. This is much safer than giving payment information to the seller directly, and much faster than mailing a check. Happy shopping!
