Sharing its name with the enormously successful 1972 album by Donald Byrd, Blackbyrd clothing is a and apparel company that pays tribute to the rock ‘n’ culture of the 1970′s. Targeting classic rock ‘n’ roll fans, Blackbyrd have developed a highly original clothing range, which in their own words is designed for ‘the convict in us all’.
Proudly Australian, the Melbourne-based clothing company was started by the Australian Football League (AFL) star Nathan Brown. Making a name for himself as a tough-as-nails forward, Brown became a valuable asset to the teams he played for before being hit by a series of injuries. Taking a leaf out of Brown’s book, Blackbyrd and their entire clothing range for that matter are styled around the bold and rugged look. As they themselves comment, black birds don’t fly in flocks, but are seen more as loners – unique by nature – and it’s this notion which gives Blackbyrd clothing its edge.
In true rock ‘n’ roll style, the Blackbyrd makes no bold promises.
As they point out – “Blackbyrd doesn’t make statements, we have no political or religious agenda and we’re not here to save the world”. Which must be why they have enough time to make stunning clothing ranges such as the recent ‘Young Bloods’ summer campaign, featuring trailer-park chic and apparel designs.
