Scientists discover “master gene”

The discovery of the ‘master gene’ which holds the key to the immune system’s first line of defence could open up a host of possibilities for new treatments for disease.

Scientists at Imperial College, London, genetically engineered mice lacking in this ‘master gene’, known as E4BP4, and found that while they were able to make up other components of the immune system, namely crucial B and T cells, they could not produce natural killer (NK) cells in the bone marrow.

These NK cells account for about a fifth of the body’s white blood cells and are thought of as the body’s ‘first line of defence’ against disease, patrolling the spleen, lymph nodes and bloodstream and rapidly identifying and destroying cells that have been invaded by viruses or turned cancerous.

With the latest news that E4BP4 is indispensable for the production of NK cells, the scientific community now know which gene is “at the top of the hierarchy”.

It is hoped that this exciting discovery could spell the way for the development of treatment’s to boost NK cell activity.

Josephine Querido, senior information officer at Cancer Research UK, offered an inspirational quote for the future, stating that the new research “is an exciting discovery that could open the doors for new ways to treat cancer.”

The findings may also have shed some light on why some people may be unusually prone to cancer or infection after research revealed that mice with just one copy of the E4BP4 gene, rather than two (one from each parent), made half the number of NK cells.

Geothermal Energy

A geothermal energy project in California has been suspended amid fears that it could cause earthquakes in the area. The project, costing $17 million and part of President Obama’s quest to find renewable energy, was run by AltaRock Energy in Middletown, California. Drilling only began in June, but now the company has suspended the project indefinitely, though despite fears from locals about the potential earthquakes and other environmental issues, no exact reason has been given for the project’s suspension.

Jan Bedrosian, from the Bureau of Land Management stated that they have given approval to AltaRock to suspend drilling:

They need to come back to us with their future plans, and they have not done that.

The notion behind the project was that water could be used to pour onto hot rocks under the earth to generate steam, which could then be used to create electricity. Fears over potential earthquakes were denied by geologists, who claim that any quakes created by the project would have been too light for anyone to notice.

The latest news about the project is that AltaRock is now searching for a new drill site after funding had been halted by the U.S. Department of Energy.

A geothermal energy project in Switzerland using similar technology was shelved recently when drilling into the earth created a 3.4-magnitude temblor.

Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe Program Wants Your Old Running Shoes

Nike wants to turn your old tennis shoes into brand spanking new athletic surfaces! The recycling process is very simple. Nike has placed Reuse-A-Shoe bins in 300 locations across the United States as well as in drop-off locations in Australia, New Zealand and Western Europe. These drop-off locations accept shoes from any brand, not just Nike sneakers. It is important, however, that the shoes are clean and that they do not have any metal cleats. Nike does not currently recycle dress shoes or flip-flops. If you do not live near a drop-off location, you can ship your old athletic shoes to the Nike processing center in Wilsonville, Oregon. (Address: Nike Recycling Center c/o Reuse-A-Shoe, 26755 SW 95th Ave., Wilsonville, OR 97070.) However, consider the carbon footprint of shipping your shoes. It may actually be “greener” to donate your old shoes locally or to find a creative use for them at home (i.e., gardening shoes or even a chew toy for the dog) than to ship them across country.

Once enough shoes have been collected at a drop-off location, they are shipped in bulk to one of Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe processing centers.
